Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins has outlined how he wants to spend more than $72 million dollars from the American Rescue Plan.

The city has already gotten $24 million and another $48 million is coming next year.

The feds do require a plan showing how the money will be spent in specific categories.

The city held meetings all across the community to hear your thoughts on how the money should be spent. An online survey was also done and this plan has taken those opinions into account.

Here's the breakdown:

$13 million will be earmarked for public safety. The Shreveport Police Department and Shreveport Fire Department will each receive $6.5 million. The police department will use the money to provide take home cars to 185 officers who live within the city limits. Money will also be used for jail upgrades, crime scene vehicles, additional body cameras, radar equipment and new firearms.

The fire department will use the money to buy new fire apparatuses, medic units, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) suits, bunker gear and CPR devices.

Water and sewer department will get $6 million for various water projects including repairs at the Amiss Water Treatment Plant. Part of the money will also be used to buy smart fire hydrants.

The technology effort will get $5 million from the money. The top priority will be spending on a traffic signal system, the Real Time Crime Center, annual video management system and cyber security training.

Public works gets $5 million for the purchase of new equipment, trash trucks and winter proofing equipment.

SPAR gets $5 for park and facility improvements. The A.B. Palmer Park will get an update. A large chunk of the money will also be used to replace the heating and air system at Shreveport City Court.

The Department of Engineering will get $4.5 million to be used on improving our infrastructure.

$3 million has been designated for SporTran. This will pay for shelters for several bus stops and ADA transit improvements.

$2.5 million will be spent by the Community Development Department for workforce development programs, an automotive incubator and a state-of-the-art workforce van for community outreach.

Another $3 million will be spent on economic development. The City of Shreveport is working on a collaborative project with Sci-Port and an endeavor to support new incoming businesses.

$1 million dollars is being spent on the response to COVID-19 in an effort to increase vaccination and testing efforts.
