Did you know that just a short drive from Shreveport, there is a destination that allows you to experience the simple magic of harvesting your own fruit?

Hillcrest Blueberry Farm has been a staple of the community since it first came to life in 1992. While the farm originally specialized in commercial fresh blueberry sales, a pivotal decision in 2008 to experiment with on-farm sales transformed it into the "U-Pick" destination that locals now cherish most.

Unfortunately, the "entire crew" won't be able to gather for a fun year of picking this summer. Hillcrest Blueberry Farm recently announced that it cannot proceed with a 2026 season. In a statement to their supporters, the farm shared: "Unfortunately, due to the weather this spring we will not be open for the 2026 season. We look forward to seeing everyone next season!"

While the farm did not specify the exact meteorological cause of the failed crop, community members have alluded to a late spring freeze, one of many weather-related challenges that can devastate a harvest.

It is a somber reminder of the unpredictability of family farming, though neighbors are already sharing hopes that next year will tell a much more fruitful story.

This setback comes after years of remarkable expansion. The farm’s website reflects on their journey: "We started with humble beginnings. Our store merely consisted of a small counter, a few you-pick buckets, and blueberry lemonade.

Since 2008, Hillcrest Blueberry Farm, LLC Farm Store has experienced extraordinary growth." That growth earned them national attention; in July 2016, Southern Living magazine recognized Hillcrest as one of only four farms considered "U-Picks Worth The Road Trip." While the buckets stay empty this year, the community remains ready to support this local gem when they return in 2027.
