Baking Cookies in a Parked Car: Louisiana Heat Test

The Louisiana heat is absolutely no joke right now. Between heat advisories and SPAR opening cooling centers, stepping outside feels like walking straight into a sauna. But if there’s one good thing about this unbearable weather, it’s that it opens up a few creative (and delicious) summer science experiments.

For instance: Did you know your parked vehicle can double as a fully functioning oven?

If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you’ve probably seen people baking batch after batch of cookies right on their car dashboards. Turns out, it’s completely real, and shockingly effective in our Ark-La-Tex heat.

How Dashboard Baking Works

To pull off a dashboard bake, your car needs to be parked in direct, unshaded sunlight on a day that hits at least 95°F. Thanks to the greenhouse effect, the trapped heat inside your vehicle can easily push dashboard temperatures well above 160°F. Because it’s a "low and slow" baking method, it takes roughly 2 to 4 hours to get a full bake.

I grabbed some ready-to-bake cookies, set the tray on my truck dash, and let them sit in the heat for three hours. The final verdict? They came out surprisingly baked through! Who knew we could completely bypass our kitchen ovens just by using our vehicles?

Lessons Learned for Next Time

After looking into the process a bit more, I realized I should have flattened the dough balls out more so they could bake evenly through the center. But overall, it was a total success!

If you’re brave enough to try this at home, just remember one vital pro-tip: Always place a thick towel or protective layer underneath your baking sheet so you don't damage or melt your dashboard!
