WEATHER UPDATE: Snow Likely In Shreveport This Weekend

There's been a lot of talk about it possibly snowing in Northwest Louisiana the past couple days. Originally there was just a chance for some flurries. Now, it sounds like may see some real snow and real winter weather on Sunday, January 8th 2021.

Meteorologist Jeff Castle, from KSLA, made the original snow projections on Monday saying that the possibility of snow kept showing up on the models. At that time, he still wasn't convinced that it would happen and stopped short of making an 'official' forecast calling for snow.

However, things are bit different now. Andrew Brightman, also from KSLA, is not only calling for snow but says it may end up being more than just flurries. Here's what Brightman wrote on their website:

There’s is growing potential that parts of the region could see up to a couple inches of snow as an area of low pressure moves through off to our south. In addition to the potential snow, we are tracking the coldest weather we have seen so far this winter with several days in the 40s and lows down in the 20s.

A couple of inches? Temps in the 20s? It sounds like were in for an actual winter storm. Here's the projections for the area according to the National Weather Service:

Now, if you're thinking to yourself, "That's nonsense! We never see winter weather like that here." Well, it's not as crazy as you think. Historically speaking, while we don't see snow very often, there have been several times when we've been hit pretty hard by snowfall.

In 2000, there was the 'Snow Bowl' edition of the Independence Bowl where the field was blanketed in snow. Shreveport, and Northwest Louisiana as a whole, also saw significant snow fall in 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2017. If you notice, there's a trend where our little part of the world sees snowfall every 3-4 years. Which means we're about due for the storm the weather man is predicting we'll get this weekend.
