Arklatex Likely To See Flash Flooding With Incoming Storms
Forecasters are relatively confident that Northwest Louisiana, Southwest Arkansas and Northeast Texas are in for another round of heavy rain this afternoon (Thursday) into tomorrow morning (Friday).
In a Hazardous Weather Outlook statement from the National Weather Service in Shreveport, we learn that as this new system moves into our region, another two to four inches of rainfall, with isolated higher amounts, will be possible in some locations.
A Moderate Risk of excessive rainfall is in effect Thursday into Friday morning. In addition, the threat of a few strong to severe storms cannot be ruled out during this late week timeframe.
Heavy rainfall will be possible once again, primarily just south of I-20, beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing through Friday. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches will be likely, with isolated higher amounts possible.
One of the biggest concerns with the potential rainfall amounts the area could see is the totally saturated soil from recent rainfall could lead to excessive runoff resulting in flash flooding of roadways, rivers, creeks and other flood-prone areas.
With the incoming storm and the possibility of an additional two to four inches of rainfall, the NWS has issued a Flood Watch for much of the Arklatex area south of I-20 that will begin at 1:00 pm today and extend through tomorrow at 6:00 pm
On a brighter note, though we could see a lot of rain in the area, forecasters aren't predicting a high probability of severe weather which would include tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds.
Otherwise, improving weather conditions are expected by this weekend through early next week, with temperatures climbing into the lower 90s.
