A new year, a new start, a new you, these kinds of goals are not uncommon for the first few weeks of January. For a lot of people losing weight and being more health conscious are certainly top of mind at this time of year.

Many of us have resolved to exercise more and eat less. That can be a good thing or a not so good thing if you aren't really sure what you're doing to your metabolism and your overall health. Many of us will turn to dieting fads based on a TV talk show or celebrity endorsement.

 

However, some of these fad diets, do eliminate food groups. We encourage our consumers not to choose fad diets because sometimes they do eliminate nutrients along with those food groups.

Those cautionary words come from  LSU AgCenter Registered Dietitian Sandra May she spoke to the Louisiana Radio Network about dieting and nutrition.

While many might choose name diets such as Atkins or Paleo to lose pounds and inches there are health concerns that you need to be aware of. May has this suggestion for those wanting to lose weight in the new year.

Choose whole grain foods half of the time, choose low fat or fat-free dairy foods, and to choose lean protein and vary that protein source.

She also recommends that you include fruits and vegetables, based on the USDA’s My Plate.

As always, anytime you are making a change in your lifestyle as it pertains to your health consult your doctor to make sure that your body can handle the abrupt changes you are about to make.
