Inmates at the Bossier Sheriff’s Office Corrections Facilities began the harvest of peas yesterday at the “Pea Farm” on 22 acres of land near the Bossier Minimum Security Facility that will be used to feed inmates at the corrections facilities in Plain Dealing.

Other vegetables have already been harvested, and more will continue to be picked through the end of July into early August on another 10 acres.  In total, thousands of pounds of vegetables, including peas, squash, peppers, okra, cucumbers, tomatoes, corn, potatoes and onions will be harvested.

“The Pea Farm provides an opportunity for non-violent offenders to be productive and work in the field for the food that they and other inmates will eat,” said Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington.  “It teaches some a trade, gives them a work ethic, and helps them take pride in what they do.   After a good days work outside, they are ready to head back to the jail, settle down for the evening and get rested for the next day.”

The Bossier Sheriff’s Office began the Pea Farm in 1995.
