Earlier this week Julie and I read that some people up north got extremely sick from eating Guinea Pig that apparently gave them food poisoning.  It was at a Minnesota food festival and apparently there were lots of samples of "international" cuisine and Guinea Pig, we're told, is a delicacy in Ecuador.

We took several phone calls from people who have eaten everything from coon and possum, to armadillo and various bugs.  But one call was actually from my Uncle Gary Brummett, who said that while he was in the Navy and touring the Middle East, he was served camel meat.  He said it wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't beef.

Well, apparently, a lot of other folks think it might be a good change from beef.

The Country Butcher and Deli, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is making a killing selling camel meat these days.  In fact, they've run out of it and won't have any more for two weeks.

We're told they're selling camel patties for $15.99/pound or ground up for $14.99/per pound. An employee said the shop was turned onto the meat by a Navy sailor who came in and said he’d had while stationed overseas and would like to have some more since he returned home.  (I'm wondering if my Uncle Gary might have a side business he hasn't told any of us about)

The employee said, “A lot of people are trying it because it’s just something new. It’s a little gamey.”

The deli isn't stopping with camel though.  They're cashing in on lots of other exotic meats including kangaroo (which is also currently sold out), ostrich, elk and alligator. Iguana meat will also be available soon.
