A few weeks ago, I really allowed myself to be vulnerable in the hopes that if it helped someone else get help, it would be worth it. Since then, I've started seeing a therapist regularly, and it has made a world of difference.

Each week, my therapist gives me an assignment. At first, I looked at these activities as homework, but now, I look forward to them. Clearly, she knows what she's doing because I've had a breakthrough moment or have come to an important self-realization with each project. It has been deeply healing.

Tonight, at the end of our session, I was given my assignment. The assignment was to consider the following question. If you woke up tomorrow and your life looked like you wanted it to, what would be different from the way it is now and if it's something achievable, what are some action steps you can take to make it happen?

Whoa.

Some of my immediate thoughts were that I certainly wouldn't be spending half of my life (slight exaggeration) cleaning up doggie 'accidents' anymore. Oops. My default first response always tends to be a deflection. But then I got kind of excited. Just imagine the possibilities. We truly are the artists when it comes to the canvas of our life.

First off, I imagine myself waking up feeling well-rested and ready to take on the day. Wouldn't that be amazing? Then I thought of what that would mean to me. It would mean I would no longer stress myself out by constantly running late because I wouldn't feel the need to continually hit the snooze button. Then I realized I would look and as a result, feel better. I'd no longer be throwing my hair in a messy bun or ponytail and opting for yoga pants because I'd have time to actually get ready. I think it's part of the human condition to feel better when you take time with your appearance. It's certainly a confidence boost. Now, I know it doesn't sound like much, but it's a start, AND it's actionable.

Obviously, I'll be adding quite a bit more to my 'ideal life' list before my next appointment, but the exercise is already opening my mind up to endless possibilities... And where there are possibilities, there's hope. And isn't that all we really want? The thought that we can design our own life, the life we want, is a heady proposition.

So what does your ideal life look like? Do you have the courage to make it happen? I pray we both do!
