We’re Spending 19+ Hours a Day Watching Screens
Man, kids really do love their screens don't they? It seems like every time I see a child, they have their face stuck in a phone, laptop, or other electronic device. Wait a second - did I say kids? I meant everyone. Yes, that includes you (and me).
People magazine just published a study of more than 2,000 people conducted by Vision Direct that looked into how much we all look into screens. Spoiler alert: it's a lot. Before the Coronavirus lock down we were totally into our electronics. According to the survey, we logged a little above 17 hours per day. Now, that total has jumped by close to 2 hours and clocks in north of 19 hours.
If you're doing the math and it just isn't working out, you have to consider this. Just like the girl in the photo above - we're all looking at more than one screen at the same time! Per device, it looks like this: laptop - 5 hours and 10 minutes per day, TV - 5 hours and 9 minutes of per day . . . phone - 5 hours and 2 minutes daily, and 3 hours and 45 minutes playing video games. If you have your phone open while you're Netflixing for an hour - that's 2 hours. That's how you can (and probably do) log more hours a day watching a screen than you are awake. According to the survey, "...the average U.S. adult will spend the equivalent of 44 years of their life staring at screens."
I get it, they're everywhere. I'm looking at one while I type this, and you are looking at one while you read it. However, since this Coronavirus shutdown seems to be drawing to a close - maybe it's time to (cautiously) go outside.
