AEP Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) is trying to prevent blackouts in the Shreveport area due to the high demand for electricity during this miserable heat. The message from SWEPCO is for us to turn off unnecessary lights, set our thermostats to 80 and try to use fans to supplement our excessive heat problems.

Another tip is to wait until the evening hours to use washers, dryers and ovens  so that the heat and humidity they create will put less strain on your air conditioning. The demand for electricity is highest between 1 and 7 pm.

If the demand remains too much for SWEPCO to handle, they will have to proceed with controlled outages to reduce power usage. If controlled outages are pursued, the goal would be to rotate planned outages throughout areas for two hours per area.
