Norton Art Gallery Hours 2026: Why the Sunset Rule is Strictly Enforced
Seriously, Shreveport, we need to act right before we lose our privileges. I’m not being dramatic; after seeing the latest update from the R.W. Norton Art Gallery, I am genuinely worried that one of the absolute "crown jewels" of our city might be taken away from us.
The Norton is a private foundation that allows us to enjoy its stunning botanical gardens for free, but lately, some visitors are making that very difficult.
The staff recently reported people climbing over gates with ladders, cutting holes in fences, and even smuggling camera equipment onto the property in baby strollers while pretending to transport an infant. Yes, you read that right.
It is time for a community "gut check." The Norton is a place of peace and beauty, not a playground where the rules are suggestions. If we want to keep this gem open, we have to start being the kind of guests they actually want to host.
The Non-Negotiables
Respect the Clock: The gardens are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Wednesday through Sunday, they are open from sunrise to sunset. Sunset is a precise time, not "whenever it gets dark." When the Caddo Parish Deputy tells you it’s time to go, please don't argue, just head out with a "thank you."
The No-Photography Rule: This is the big one. "No photography" means no images or videos, digitally, electronically, or otherwise. Please stop hiding cameras under your clothes or handing them to your kids to bypass the rules. And a pro-tip: If you do break the rules, definitely don’t tag the Norton in the photos. It’s a sure-fire way to get banned.
The "Picnic" Definition: A picnic means a blanket on the ground. It does not mean tables, chairs, or elaborate setups. Keep your groups under 10 people and always use the trash receptacles.
General Manners: No weddings, no private events, no bikes or scooters, and no feeding the wildlife.
The bottom line is simple: treat the Norton like you would treat a friend’s home. We are lucky to have such a world-class space in the 318. Let’s make sure we don’t love it to death by refusing to follow the rules.
