Dangerous Heat Wave Triggers Extreme Heat Warning in Shreveport

When the National Weather Service in Shreveport describes the temperature as "Oppressive", we're pretty sure we are in for another day in the danger zone.

And that's exactly how they describe it! Due to the "oppressive heat" forecasted yet again this afternoon, the NWS has issued a Major Heat Risk for today and meteorologists are warning that this type of weather comes with a lengthy list of dangers.

In their announcement we learn that for portions of southwest Arkansas, north central and northwest Louisiana, and northeast Texas, this Heat Advisory and Extreme Heat Warning will remain active. Remember to exercise heat safety precautions if outdoors for any extended periods!

The warning goes on to say that today we will experience dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 115.

Describing those dangers involved with weather conditions this hot, NWS states that heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

NWS cautions all those in the area to take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Obviously we should all limit our time outdoors during this time and heed this warning, but for any wondering just how this heat wave stacks up in comparison to previous years, we don't have to look back far to see just how hot it can get around here.

The record high temperature in Shreveport first took place on August 18, 1909, when the mercury topped out at 110 degrees, but then on August 25 and 26 of 2023, Shreveport tied that record, not once, but twice.
