Here Are Ways You Can Remember 9/11 in Shreveport Bossier
20 years ago this Saturday we will mark 20 years since the attacks on September 11, 2001 which left nearly 3,000 people dead.
Will we remember this day in our history? Many college students today were not even born. Do they know what happened? CBS Sunday morning reported this weekend only 14 states require instruction on the history of 9/11 and Louisiana is not one of them.
You can pause this Saturday to remember this tragic day in our community.
Bossier City is holding the annual 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony honoring the thousands of innocent people that were lost and the courage of all who risked their lives to save others.
Guest speaker this year will be Sgt. Andy Stephenson
And for the first time, there will be a B52 flyby to close out the event.
Location: Liberty Garden at the City of Bossier City.
620 Benton Road, Bossier City, La 71111 See Less
If you want to do something more physical to be involved in remembering the heroes who died, you can take part in the YMCA's Commemorative Stair Climb. Stairmasters will be set up in the lobby of the YMCA on Preston at Knight Street for folks to jump on with a community goal of climbing the 1980 steps, the same number in the World Trade Center. Several military, firefighters and police groups will be making the climb to remember those who died.
This is Saturday, September 11 from 7am-6pm for Y members and non-members.
Those who climb 110 flights of stairs or folks who donate $10 will get a commemorative 9/11 pin to remember the date.
YMCA CEO Gary Lash says:
We believe part of our role is to serve as a conscience for our community. It is our responsibility to remind people daily of the importance of wellness and it is our job to provide a place where the community can come together for various important events. Our commemorative stair climb is one of the days of the year when we fulfill our mission most fully.
The event is sponsored this year by Academy Sports and Outdoors. Click here to reserve your time slot now.
Honor the Brave Day will be held Sunday, September 12 at First Baptist Church in Haughton from 9:30-10:30am and from 11:00-noon with lunch to follow.
They will recognize the bravery of first responders, as they serve and protect us and what an important part of the community they are. We will also be hosting a lunch for them after the services. They urge our entire community to pray for our first responders.
Below are photos from that day and the days after that show the horror that we all agree should not be forgotten, but also a nation coming together.
