Shreveport Loses Dedicated Advocate for Victims of Abuse

Shreveport and the entire region has lost a tireless advocate for domestic violence victims.

Petrina Jenkins died Sunday after suffering from health issues. Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Morning Star Baptist Church in Shreveport.

Jenkins was the Outreach Coordinator for Project Celebration for many years. She has been described as a "Warrior Queen" for helping victims of domestic abuse all around our community. Jenkins was rushed to Ochsner Transplant Center in New Orleans back in September where she was waiting for a heart and kidney transplant after battling congestive heart failure. She died Sunday.

Word of her death came during the Monday afternoon Shreveport City Council meeting by her friend, Councilwoman Tabitha Taylor who said "I am going to miss my best friend and my sister. Not only my sister in advocacy, but my sister in friendship."

Petrina Jenkins is survived by her husband and two sons along with her mother. A Go Fund Me Account has been set up to help the family.

Jenkins was recently given the Lifetime Achievement Award by Project Celebration for "her selfless commitment, compassion, and support for the victim/survivors and families of domestic violence." She was honored for more than 20 years of "providing advocacy, education, prevention, and exceptional service over the course of her career."

I want to thank Petrina Jenkins for her many years of dedication to serving victims of domestic abuse. She has been there fighting for women and children in every corner of our community.
