In the age of digital deception, we hear about new scams every day. Most are easy enough to spot, suspicious links from "long-lost relatives" or strange calls about our car’s extended warranty, but some are much more calculated. These are the ones that target our local culture and the small business owners who make our community vibrant. The latest target? None other than Shreveport’s own Mudbug Madness.

If you aren't familiar with one of the largest crawfish festivals in the country, Mudbug Madness is more than just an event; it is a North Louisiana institution.

Every Memorial Day weekend, Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport transforms into a sea of red, filled with the best mudbugs, cold booze, and world-class live music. For a local craft or food vendor, snagging a spot at this festival is a major milestone and a huge opportunity for revenue.

Unfortunately, scam artists have caught on to how much people want to be part of the magic. These "cunning" hackers are creating fake social media posts and emails that look surprisingly official, hoping to trick hopeful vendors into paying for fake booth spaces.

The Official Warning

Thankfully, the Mudbug Madness organizers are one step ahead. They were recently made aware of these online predatory tactics and issued a stern warning to the public.

In a recent Facebook post, the official Mudbug Madness page stated:

"WARNING: This is NOT Mudbug Madness! Don’t be a victim to the 'Vendor Spots Available' scams either via email or Facebook! Our vendor applications will be available at mudbugmadness.com on January 12. We will never post from a personal page—so if it’s not from this official page, it is a scam! All emails will also come from the same domain."

How to Protect Yourself When navigating these "Vendor Available" posts on social media, look for the red flags. Legitimate festivals like Mudbug Madness will almost never reach out to you via a personal Facebook profile or ask for payment through apps like Venmo or CashApp.

Remember, the official application window opens on January 12th. Until then, stay vigilant, and always verify the source before you hit "send" on your hard-earned money.
