LSU Pitcher’s Father Helps Save The Life Of A Florida Fan
Not all the drama in TD Ameritrade Stadium in Omaha Nebraska took place on the field last night. There was some real life and death drama that took place in the stands and it involved the father of one of the LSU Tigers' star players.
Dr. Jerry Poche might be better known outside of Lutcher Louisiana as Jared Poche's dad. Dr. Poche has been practicing in family medicine in the Lutcher area for almost three decades. Last night his skill, as well as the skill of Jimmy Roy, the father of LSU's Strenth and Conditioning Coach Travis Roy probably saved the life of an elderly University of Florida fan.
It was in the 6th inning of last night's first game of the College World Series final between LSU and Florida that the two LSU supporters heard a call for help from several rows down from their seats in the stadium. When they arrived on the scene they found an elderly man slumped over in the arms of his family.
He was basically dead. The family was holding him up but he wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse. We got him on the ground and started doing CPR and stuff and it looked like we saved him.
That's what Poche told reporter Andrew Lopez of NOLA.com and the Times-Picayune.
Poche and Roy's efforts helped sustain the man until paramedics arrived and transported the man to a local hospital. The last report on the man's condition was that he was in stable condition. Let's hope for a speedy recovery for that gentleman.
I don't know Dr. Poche or Mr. Roy personally but I bet I would probably like them. Far too often we hear stories of fan bases that trash talk, curse, and do foul things to each other in the stands. Unfortunately, sometimes that's true but it's usually one or two bad apples and not the fan base as a whole.
These two gentlemen are the epitome of sportsmanship and basic human decency. Both qualities that appear to be fading away not only from athletic competition but from society in general.
There's no doubt in this situation what team Dr. Poche and Mr. Roy were there to support. However, there is also no doubt that even the College World Series is just a game when the sanctity of human life is on the line.
While the headlines of the day might simply report the final score of last night's game. Florida won by a score of 4 to 3. The real story is that no matter what color your jersey is or what the emblem on your cap might represent the bottom line is this. We are all on the same team and real teammates always look for each other.
