Colossal Story Of Mountain Lion Killed In Longview, Texas
While some might consider the circumstances of how a mountain lion met it's death this week, some would feel that "where" the cougar died to be an even bigger story.
In Longview, Texas, less than eighty miles from Shreveport, the Longview Police Department has released details of the shocking story of how a mountain lion was killed this week by a Longview Police Officer.
According to their Facebook page, the officer was patrolling in the 3800 block of West Loop 281, when he accidentally struck the mountain lion with his police cruiser.
And because the injuries to the lion was so severe, the animal had to be euthanized at the scene. Afterwards, Texas Parks and Wildlife was notified, with the warden taking possession of the deceased animal.
The reason this story is so shocking to many, is that in spite of countless photographs from game cameras and actual personal sightings, many are skeptical to believe that these creatures roam the woods of Louisiana.
Though mountain lions are common in vast areas of west Texas and southern Oklahoma, having one this close to Shreveport is an oddity to say the least. And the way this one met his demise is certainly as unique.
While I'm not suggesting that every block of woods in Louisiana or East Texas is crawling with man-eating cougars, it does make a person wonder what the possible population of these cats might actually be.
You might even recall that a cougar was actually shot and killed in a neighborhood by the Bossier City Police Department on Nov. 30, 2008.
But please remember, according to LDWF, the penalty for killing a cougar in Louisiana may include up to one year in jail and/or a $100,000 fine.
