Shreveport Teen Arrested for Mooretown Shooting Death

The Shreveport Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit has made an arrest following the shooting death of a man in the Mooretown neighborhood late yesterday (1/17/23) evening.

On January 17, 2024, just before 6:00 p.m., Shreveport Police patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting the 4100 block of Via Street. Police located a 18-year-old man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper body. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the Shreveport Fire Department.

Investigators were called to the scene and launched their investigation. Patrol officers detained the suspect and other witnesses who remained on scene following the incident. The Crime Scene Unit processed the scene for evidence and investigators interviewed witnesses. Through their inquiry, they learned that four males were sitting in a car in the block and a 16-year-old sitting in the backseat was in possession of what was described as an AR pistol. The juvenile was said to be handling the weapon when it discharged and struck the front seat passenger once in the back of the torso.

The Caddo Parish Coroner took custody of the decedent and the Coroner’s Office will release the name of the decedent at a later time.

The 16-year-old juvenile was photographed and fingerprinted at the Shreveport City Jail, then booked into the Caddo Parish Juvenile Detention center on one count of Illegal Use of a Weapon. The investigation is ongoing, and charges will potentially be upgraded.

The Shreveport Police Department discourages anyone from handling weapons that they are not familiar with. Weapons should be stored in a safe place. When handling a weapon, the muzzle should be pointed in a safe direction and your finger should never be inside of the trigger guard.
