National Food Stamp Benefits Going Up 25%
Good news for food stamp recipients across the nation. President Joe Biden has ok’d an increase in benefits for need families. This change is the biggest single increase in the history of the program. Beginning in October, food stamps will go up by about 25 percent for most families. 42 million families getting SNAP benefits will see the increase.
A formal announcement is expected to be made today by the Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. How much help is on the way? The average benefit will now go up from $121 dollars per month for each person in the household to $157 a month for each person.
President Biden has been working to beef up the safety net for families in need of assistance. The President approved the change after seeing the needs grow dramatically during the pandemic.
Louisiana DCFS has posted information showing the benefits were temporarily boosted through September of the this year due to the pandemic. This change will make the larger amount permanent.
In Louisiana the maximum benefit for each person is already at $204 a month per person. But that amount was bumped up to $234 during the pandemic.
