The US’s first gold medal of the summer Olympic games came from 19-year-old Virginia Thrasher in the women’s 10-meter air rifle competition.
Michael Phelps won his 19th gold medal over the weekend leading the men’s US team in the 4x100 freestyle relay. His 3-month-old son Boomer was there to see it even though he won’t remember it! Not to be outdone, US swimmer Katie Ledecky beat her own world record for 400-meter freestyle.
The medal count so far? The US leads with 12 medals, 3 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze. Team USA is followed by China then Italy in the current standings.
There were some shocking moments in the first weekend of play. A French gymnast broke his leg on the vault during the preliminaries and it was really hard to watch. To add insult to injury, the paramedics DROPPED his stretcher.
A Dutch cyclist was heading for what might have been gold when she crashed and ended up in the hospital with a concussion and three cracks in her spine and an Iranian cyclist actually ended up hitting a concrete wall.
Alex Rodriguez says he’s retiring and will play his final game this Friday… he’ll be staying on with the Yankees as an advisor but don’t think his retirement was his idea. Word is they were going to cut him.
