The rise in the number of positive COVID-19 cases continues to complicate what's already been, what most would say is, the most tumultuous year in American history.

When Governor John Bel Edwards announced that due to the increase in COVID activity that Louisiana would remain in Phase 2 of the recovery effort until, at least, July 31, you could hear a collective grown throughout the state.

But apparently lawmakers are seeing something they don't like and because of that, earlier this week, Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins issued a "Mask Mandate" that goes into effect at 5:00 pm today requiring all citizens to don a mask anytime they enter a Shreveport business. There are slight modifications for restaurants and other industries, but the message is clear; wear a mask in Shreveport.

Now we get word that the Caddo Commission has called a special meeting today where they are expected to vote on an ordinance mandating the wearing of masks in all Caddo Parish businesses to help combat the spread of COVID-19.

Enforcement of the possible mandate would fall squarely on the shoulders of the  Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Steve Prator has just released the following statement today regarding the proposed ordinance:

"Should the Caddo Parish Commission pass an ordinance requiring that masks be worn, the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office will respond to any complaints from businesses or citizens. We don't expect a great increase in our workload since the law would apply only to unincorporated areas of the parish outside towns like Vivian, Blanchard, and Greenwood, which are more populated.
"These 'failure to wear a mask' complaints will be answered when time permits and when we are not engaged in more pressing matters," the Sheriff said.
Regardless of whether the ordinance passes, Sheriff Prator said he encourages the use of masks when in close proximity to others.
