Barskdale AFB Will Send Indy Bowl Fans a Very Shreveport Welcome
It's a pretty big weekend for College Football in Shreveport this weekend. This Saturday at 2:30 p.m., the 8-4 UAB Blazers will take on the #8 Ranked 10-2 BYU Cougars in that gigantic gridiron cathedral right off I-20 we call the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl. The teams and fans have already started to show up, and many more will follow to watch this highly anticipated game.
Obviously, it's going to be a pretty big party. When you factor in all of the pre-parties, the tailgating, the game itself, and the victory celebration / defeat consolation party afterwards - it's clear that this is shaping up to be a wild weekend. Our out-of-town guests will be living large, Shreveport-style.
To add to that whole "Shreveport-vibe" that these sports fans will be experience, the brass at our very own Barksdale Air Force Base have decided to do something special. Now, it may not seem special to you because we have become accustomed to the roaring sound of freedom in the air above us, but I imagine BYU fans from Utah and the UAB faithful from Alabama don't get to see the majesty that is the mighty B-52 Stratofortress owning the sky all that often. This weekend, 3 of these gigantic metal military birds will bless the game and stands filled with around 30,000 screaming fans with a fly-by fit for the Superbowl.
According to a report from KSLA, the Air Force is sending more than just the incredible mini-airshow of B-52s piloted by proud crew members from the 20th, 96th, and 34th bomb squadrons, Barksdale AFB will also provide the honor guard for the National Anthem, as well as Airmen to present the Omar N. Bradley “Spirit of the Independence” Award, the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Game, and the championship trophy
