Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton Reveal Why They Never Dated
Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton are both legends in their own right, but they've been longtime collaborators and even longer friends for decades. While the pair spent many years touring and performing together, they never dated, and now they're explaining why a romance never blossomed.
"I'm a believer that tension is better if you keep it than if you satisfy it," Rogers jokes during an interview on the Today show. "And then secondly, she said no to me."
"I'm not his type," Parton retorted before sharing that the real reason the two never got together was because he felt more like family to her than a romantic partner. "Nah. You know what, we were almost like brother and sister. And it would almost be like incest. So we just never went there."

Several stars from across music genres will bid farewell to Rogers at All in for the Gambler: Kenny Rogers’ Farewell Concert Celebration in Nashville on Wednesday (Oct. 25). Little Big Town, Alison Krauss, Jamey Johnson, the Flaming Lips and more are coming together to honor Rogers and his illustrious career before he retires.
Rogers and Parton will unite one last time to sing their famous duet, "Islands in the Stream," for a live audience. "I think the memories play a big part in 'Islands,'" Rogers acknowledges. "I think when you look back on anything, it's kind of the impact it had on you and your life at that time."
As for Parton, she knows the friendship between her and Rogers will continue for years to come and values how they share the same sense of humor. "We're really good friends. And we're so much alike. We know the same people. We laugh at the same kind of jokes. I tell jokes and I tell him not to tell that I told the joke," she says.
The All in for the Gambler concert will be recorded live from Music City's Bridgestone Arena.
