Woman Divorcing Husband Because He’s a Finalist for One-Way Trip to Mars

You might recall us talking last March about a company offering free trips to Mars. The trip is still about 10 years off, but there's a catch: it's a one-way ticket, so you have to die up there.

That fact has the wife of one finalist considering divorce.

However, they still got about 200,000 applications. One of those applicants is 38 year old Ken Sullivan of Farmington, Utah and Ken was recently named one of the 1,058 finalists. These finalists will eventually be pared down to the final 24 who will take the trip.

However, Ken has a tough dilemma. He's got a wife and four kids ranging in age form six months to 13 years old. And now his wife Becky is divorcing him, because, as she says, he clearly would choose Mars over his family.

Becky says, "The question is do we get divorced now or get divorced later? If I stand in the way of his dreams and passions, then we get divorced now."

As for Ken, he says he wishes the Mars trip would get delayed a few years so he could be there until all of his kids are at least 18, but, he lamented "I just hope the family will be able to forgive me down the road. Hopefully there isn't too much hatred of my being selfish in pursuing a dream."

It's not clear if Becky will stay with him if he isn't selected for Mars, or if this divorce is on no matter what.

Though there's certainly nothing funny about divorce, it sounds like this marriage is on the rocks for sure. And even if Ken doesn't make the final 24, he sounds like a guy who certainly needs a hobby. A hobby that keeps you here on earth.
