When Exactly is Trick or Treating This Year for Shreveport?
Halloween 2022 is expected to be huge this year. After two years of lockdowns, families are ready to get back to life. This year, the kids will be wearing masks that are actually fun. And as we expect record number of trick-or-treaters, we can also expect a higher possibility of children getting hurt.
The Shreveport Police Department reports that children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other day of the year. The number of children on the streets, combined with a lack of visibilty due to low lighting and dark costumes make it a dangerous combination.
Trick-or-Treating in Shreveport this year is officially on Monday, October 31st. You can expect the younger children to be out before dusk, and as it is getting darker earlier and earlier, trick-or-treating will continue until well after dark.
Helpful Safety Tips from the SPD
Grab a flashlight. A cell phone is also a good idea if you have one. A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds. If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time children should return home. Teach your children never to enter a stranger's home or car
Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends. Carry a white bag or pillowcase for your candy and add some reflective tape. Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home, and take care to avoid any food allergies.
Tips for Motorists
If you will be chauffeuring little ones around, stay especially vigilant watching for children running into the street. The kids are excited about collecting as much candy as they can, and they aren't thinking about traffic safety... so YOU HAVE TO. Enter and exit driveways and intersections carefully and slowly. At dusk and later in the evening watch for children (and adults) in dark clothing. Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from even driving on Halloween.
