Yesterday morning Tracy and I brought this up on the morning show and honestly I didn't think people could be so dumb as to say some of these things, but based on the number of phone calls we got from people who had been told even dumber stuff than this, I figured now would be a good time to post a list of things NOT to say to your friend going through a divorce.

Having gone through a divorce myself, I totally understand the sensitivity that recent divorcee is feeling.  I mean, the person you "thought" you'd spend the rest of your life with, no longer wants to have anything to do with you...or vice versa.  Either way, a little insensitive comment at this time is almost like asking a woman when the baby is due...only to find out she's not pregnant.  (Made that same mistake myself, but that's another story)  So according to Woman's Day here are a few things to shy away from to keep that friendship from fading faster than your grandmother's chocolate pie at Thanksgiving.

  1. "I knew it would happen eventually"
  2. "But he seemed like such a nice guy"
  3. "I don't believe in divorce.  Did you try hard enough?"
  4. "How are you going to take care of your family now?"
  5. "You ruined our annual holiday celebration"
  6. "Good for  you; men are useless anyway"
  7. "It'll be tough to start over at your age"
  8. "At least you didn't have kids"
