Tires are a nuisance.  Sure, they're great when you get a brand new set on your ride.  They make your vehicle drive better,  look better, perform better, and honestly look better.  But that shiny black, high-tread life doesn't last forever.  Eventually, you'll have to replace those faded and bald pieces of rubber with a fresh set of shoes for your ride.  You'll be back in the fresh set club, but what happens to your old ones?

One thing is for sure, they don't fade away.  When disposed of properly, they can be recycled in to a multitude of products including building materials and even fuel.  Unfortunately, a disturbing number of these old tires end up in creeks, piled up out in the woods or tossed to the side of the road.  Even if there are just a few stacked up in your back yard - it can be a ecological disaster.

Discarded tires are a favorite breeding ground for mosquitoes (which are known to carry diseases like the West Nile Virus), a prime hiding spot for the many breeds of snakes in Louisiana.  Luckily, if you are burdened with black circular reminders of road trips gone by - the city of Shreveport is here to help!  Tire Amnesty Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 17th.

Just drop off your old tires between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Fleet Services building on 1701 Monty St. in Shreveport, and let the professionals dispose of those eye-sores/health hazards for free!  According to the ArkLaTex Homepage, Caddo Parish officials have placed the following restrictions on this event:

  • NO commercial participation
  • Each vehicle is limited to FIVE (5) tires per visit
  • Small tires (golf cart, bicycle, etc.) are accepted
  • Partial tires (ripped, blown out, etc.) are accepted
  • Tires with rims will not be accepted
  • 18 Wheeler tires will not be accepted

You will need to provide proof that you are a resident of the parish (driver's license and a current utility bill in your name), and you will need to fill out a form.  If you'd like to streamline the process, you can fill out the paperwork in advance on the parish's website here.
