With the I-20 reconstruction project slated to continue until approximately this time next year, drivers have become accustomed to an ever-increasing amount of rerouting and in the latest announcement from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development we learn that another issue is slated to begin tomorrow night.

According to DOTD, beginning tomorrow night, Thursday, December 5, I-20 westbound will be closed at the I-220 interchange in Bossier City.

This nighttime closure, which will take place from approximately 8:00 pm to 6:00 am over the course of four nights, is necessary to allow the contractor for the ongoing I-20 major rehabilitation project to continue to prepare the concrete barriers to shift traffic onto the remaining new travel lanes in the westbound direction.

This is an ongoing process, with the first portion of the shift having already occurred from Industrial Drive to Airline Drive.

A similar process is also ongoing for the eastbound direction. Once all traffic in both directions is shifted onto the newly constructed travel lanes, the project will be considered fully transitioned into Phase 3 (final phase of construction).

As a reminder, Phase 3 involves removing and fully reconstructing the outside (right) lanes of the interstate from Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive in both directions, as well as rebuilding the ramps at Industrial Drive (currently underway), Benton Road, Barksdale Boulevard, and Airline Drive.

DOTD advises that all westbound traffic on I-20 will be detoured to I-220 during the nightly closures and that this work could be delayed, extended or days/hours modified in the event of inclement weather.

DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment. Remember to leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Area residents should exercise caution when driving, walking, or biking near an active construction zone.
