With all the terribly hot weather we have been experiencing , I just about gave up on seeing any hummingbirds coming to visit my feeder. The "food" evaporates so quickly, even though I have my feeder in a sheltered shady spot, and I hadn't seen any birds in weeks.

So I was surprised when I went out last week and saw a poor little hummingbird desperately trying to get food from my feeder that was totally dry.

I filled the feeder and since have seen several of the little birds coming for a drink. Which got me to thinking, as we go through the late summer months drenched in sweat with our air conditioners cranked up to cool off, how do the hummingbirds deal with the heat. Without ice makers, fans, and even the ability to sweat, how do our small feathery friends stay cool?

On hot days, birds have several ways to regulate their body temperatures to keep from overheating. Physically, birds have evolved to adapt to different temperature ranges, and their behavior can also help them keep cool.

Just like dogs, wild birds will open their bills and pant to help dissipate heat on a hot day. They will adapt their daily activities to suit the climate. On a very hot day birds are less active during the heat of the day and more active when the sun is lower and the air cooler which is when I have been seeing the birds visit my feeder.

I love hummingbirds! I think they are fascinating and this video is just so cute it will almost make you cry! Enjoy!
