I've contended for a long time that WalletHub hates Louisiana.... even more specifically, Shreveport. In a recent report, WalletHub released their study on "Best & Worst Places to Raise a Family.  And as you can probably imagine, Louisiana did not fare well in the study.

The study compared more than 180 U.S. cities based on a variety of metrics, including cost of housing, quality of local school and health-care systems, opportunities for fun and recreation, etc.

Out of the 182 cities listed, Shreveport falls in at 176.  Some of the specific rankings were:

    • 125 out of 182 on Family Fun
    • 170 out of 182 on Health & Safety
    • 104 out of 182 on Education & Child Care
    • 160 out of 182 on Affordability
    • 161 out of 182 on Socioeconomics

But it wasn't just Shreveport that didn't do well.  Louisiana didn't fare well overall in the study.  New Orleans, not surprisingly didn't rank well either.  But they did rank better than Shreveport because New Orleans scored higher on Family Fun.  But really? FAMILY fun?

Baton Rouge came in better than Shreveport and New Orleans, ranking 159 out of 182, scoring better in Education & Child Care, (74 out of 182), and Affordability, (91 out of 182)

Louisiana is facing a huge out-migration problem, losing population every year.  According to Audacy.com:

Recent numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau show Louisiana ranks fifth in the nation when it comes to population loss. The statistics read like this: from July 1, 2021-July 1, 2022, Louisiana lost 36,857 residents.

The Top Five places to Raise a Family include:

  1. Fremont, CA
  2. Overland Park, KS
  3. Irvine, CA
  4. Plano, TX
  5. South Burlington, VT

As we gear up for another gubernatorial election, maybe the candidates will take note of what other places are doing right, and let's make some changes to help our Bayou State be a better place for our families.
