The brightest star in Earth's night sky is Sirius in the constellation of Canis Major. Ancient legend suggests that this "greator dog" is Orion's faithful companion and hunting dog. It's appearance in the night sky during the hot summer months is where we get the term "the dog days of Summer." Man's best friend has lived in the night sky since the beginning of time, and now pooch loving stargazers will have a way to celebrate both of their favorite things thanks to Sci-Port.

Sci-Port will soon host a nighttime, dog-friendly event highlighting canines and celestial bodies alike with Sci-Port’s Dogs After Dark Star Party. The event will allow dogs and their humans to experience Sci-Port after hours Friday, July 22 from 8 to 11 p.m. The event is open to all ages and celebrates astronomy as it relates to dogs.

According to a release from Sci-Port, this event will partner with some great organizations to help raise awareness, while educating dog owners about what's in the heavens above.

Sci-Port has partnered with area rescue, pet advocacy and shelter organizations, including the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, Friends of Bossier City Animal Control, Robinson’s Rescue Low Cost Spay and Neuter, and Rockers Rescue for the event. The Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, Friends of Bossier City Animal Control and Rockers Rescue will bring adoptable dogs to Dogs After Dark.

Activities will include:

  • Treat Station: Make a treat for your pooch.
  • Paw Prints: Preserve your pup’s print in a Petri dish.
  • Planetarium Presentations: Shows will be offered at 8, 9 and 10 p.m.
