Wednesday's D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony at Princeton Elementary School was special to me for a couple of reasons.  My youngest son, Colt, a fifth grader, was graduating from Drug Abuse Resistance Education, D.A.R.E.

And what made this even more special was the fact that my father-in-law, Deputy Norman Craig, was his instructor for the course, and would be presenting Colt with his certificate of completion.  It was a little awesome to say the least.

As it turns out, these 300 youngsters were the largest group of 5th graders to ever graduate from D.A.R.E. in Bossier Parish.  Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington was even in attendance as these youngsters did something that most would never dare.  They opened the ceremonies with a prayer.  Just incredible.

The students performed a musical and dance routine during graduation that certainly grabbed everyone’s attention.  I was truly amazed at what these young people learned as many read speeches they'd prepared speaking of countless lives lost due to alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse.

They also vowed to never take part in these activities and how to handle bullying in the school and at home.
