Lately, it feels like our news feeds are packed with heartbreaking pleas from animal rescues across the Ark-La-Tex. When local shelters hit maximum capacity, it’s easy for us to get discouraged and wonder how we can do better. But as it turns out, Louisiana pet owners deserve some major kudos.

While we are always working hard to improve, the latest data proves that Louisiana is actually winning when it comes to responsible pet ownership.

According to a new study by MetLife Pet Insurance, more Americans than ever are reconsidering how they bring furry friends into their homes, and Louisiana is leading the pack, ranking 17th in the nation for search behavior that favors shelter adoption over purchasing from a breeder.

The numbers show a massive nationwide shift, with nearly one in two Americans (49%) stating they plan to adopt their next pet from a shelter or rescue. For many, it’s a decision that makes both emotional and financial sense. On average, acquiring a pet from a breeder costs seven times more than adopting from a shelter ($1,061 versus just $151).

Interestingly, the study found that Pitbulls are the most-searched breed for rescue, followed by Labradors, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Huskies.

If you are looking to expand your family compound, you don't need to look far or spend a fortune. Right here in Shreveport, the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana is constantly showcasing incredible, sweet animals eager for a second chance. And don't buy into the myth that rescues don't have specific breeds; our local shelters frequently take in purebred dogs who just need a loving home.

Let's keep up the momentum, Shreveport. By choosing adoption and staying diligent with spaying and neutering, we can continue to prove that Louisiana has the biggest heart for rescue pets.
