The Shreveport-Bossier community is waking up to a profound loss today. Whether you are a lifelong member of the Catholic Church or simply a resident who appreciates the spiritual and architectural fabric of our city, there is a high chance that Monsignor Earl V. Provenza impacted your life.

Early this morning, May 7, the Diocese of Shreveport shared the heartbreaking news that Msgr. Provenza has passed away. While he was technically retired, anyone who knew him understood that he remained a deeply active, driving force in North Louisiana until the very end. To call him a "pillar" of the community feels like an understatement; he was a living example of what it means to lead through service.

Throughout his more than 60 years in the ministry, Msgr. Provenza’s fingerprints were left on some of our most cherished landmarks. He was the visionary behind the stunning renovation of the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans and the founder of Mary Queen of Peace Parish.

Beyond the brick and mortar, his true legacy lies in the people he mentored. His commitment to future generations was evident in the numerous seminarian burses completed in his honor, ensuring that his mission of faith would continue long after his tenure.

Even for those outside the diocese, his influence was felt through his advocacy for a better, kinder Shreveport. He worked tirelessly to make our region a better home for everyone, regardless of their background.

We take comfort in the incredible legacy he leaves behind, a legacy built on faith, hard work, and an unwavering love for his neighbors. As we wait for final funeral arrangements, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the countless individuals who were blessed to call him their priest.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.
