Jamie Stephens Is This Week’s Caught in the Act Recipient
Jamie Stephens is living proof that with the right attitude, you really can turn lemons into lemonade.
When her daughter, Maddie Jo, was diagnosed with a relatively unknown illness, Jamie took it upon herself to not only give her daughter much needed aid, but she was able to help the entire community with education and guidance.
It's Jamie's giving heart and willingness to serve that we celebrate this week and she is our latest recipient of the Kiss Country Caught in the Act Award!
Just see her amazing nomination letter we received from Kristina Evans.
Jamie Stephens was just a normal mom of a normal rambunctious little girl...until she wasn't. When her daughter, Maddie Jo, turned 6 years old, she was diagnosed with Primary Lymphedema in her right leg which causes it to swell to twice its normal size. Frustrated with the lack of knowledge, resources, and programs that would help her navigate her "new normal," Jamie started the non-profit organization known as Jo Rising, and vowed to make things easier for herself, her daughter, and anyone else who needed guidance. As a grass-roots organization, Jo Rising spreads awareness about lymphedema and also helps parents and families navigate the world of lymphedema; answering questions about clothing, shoes, bandages, access to care, massage, and "is this normal?" for parents as they go. Jamie is the heart and soul behind Jo Rising; the beacon of hope for children and adults who are learning to live with lymphedema. Jamie helps families navigate the uncertainty of lymphedema care going above and beyond to find and document resources for everyone involved, and perhaps most importantly makes their kids/family members feel included in everyday activities and gives them the feeling of a supportive community. What sets Jamie apart is her humility and kindness. Her ability to connect on a personal level with genuine care, understanding, and dedication to helping is what has made Jo Rising the transformative organization that it is today. Despite the challenges she faces, Jamie remains undeterred. She continues to organize and hold free events: 5ks, shoe exchanges, information sessions, support groups, and even fundraisers in lieu of birthday gifts for herself. Jamie's journey with Jo Rising is more than a story of one person's efforts; it's a powerful narrative of how kindness, dedication, and a commitment to others can ignite change. She is a true inspiration, reminding us all that with a compassionate heart and a determined spirit, we can indeed make a difference in the world.
