Get Ready to Laugh at How Louisiana Folks Pronounce Worcestershire Sauce

Lafayette, LA (KPEL News) - South Louisiana has some pretty strange words and spellings, and outsiders are often confused by pronunciation of letter combinations like "eaux." One word, though, trips them up: Worcestershire.

Based on the plethora of websites that suggest the correct way to pronounce it, Louisianans aren't alone in the struggle.

A little crowdsourcing revealed that Acadiana natives have a lot of fun when they refer to the fermented sauce that's flavored with ingredients like molasses, sugar, onion, garlic, and even anchovies.

The social media conversation started with the following post.

I'm not convinced that even that pronunciation is the right one, but I do know I prefer some of the suggestions from my friends and neighbors.

West-Chester-shire -- Good try.

Worse-ter-shur -- Swing and a miss.

W sauce -- This no-frills option seems popular.

Wa Shista shire -- Nope, not quite.

Werther-shire -- Isn't that a candy?

What's-this-here sauce -- Another clever crowd-favorite.

Lea & Perrins -- Nah, not gonna even try.

Wash your sister sauce -- Definitely the most comical option!

Wus to shear sauce -- Points for getting the closest.
