Back in June a report from the National Safety Council (NSC), ranked Louisiana as the 10th safest place to live in the U.S.  In the first study of its kind, the NSC looked at three areas:  road safety, home and community safety, and workplace safety.  In a blog I wrote about the study, I noted the somewhat ironic fact that our state ranks 2nd in the nation in road safety.  Ironic because our crumbling road infrastructure would seem to suggest the opposite.

Louisiana ranks 10th in home and community safety, but lags behind much of the country in workplace safety where we're ranked 40th.  Though our state received an overall grade of C in the NSC's study, no state in the U.S. received an A.

Today WalletHub released its study of 2017's Safest Cities in America.  The report looked at three main areas to determine its rankings:  Home and Community Safety, Financial Safety, and Natural Disaster Risk.  Out of the 182 cities included in the report, three Louisiana cities rank near the bottom: Shreveport, New Orleans, and Baton Rouge.

New Orleans comes in at #168 due to its high crime and unemployment rate, and its extremely high natural disaster risk rate.   Baton Rouge is the lowest-ranked city in Louisiana at #174.  This dubious distinction is due primarily to its coming in at #179 in Home and Community Safety.

Shreveport, by comparison, is ranked the 146th-safest city in America.  While its violent crime rates have risen dramatically this year, Shreveport is still a safer place to live than Austin, Dallas, Tulsa, and Denver, just to name a few.
