Don't be surprised if you see empty tables set up around our area on Veterans Day.

I'm still learning a lot when it comes to military traditions. One thing I have recently learned about is the Missing Man Table. After reading up on it, I would not be surprised one bit if there are several of these set up around our area.

Their set up to honor the men and women we have lost during their service to our great nation.

I get chills just thinking about it and I find myself searching my memory to try to remember if I have encountered one of these before. There are very distinct items that are placed on this table along with table itself. Each one symbolizing something to remember our lost veterans by.

First, the table will always be round to show our everlasting concern. Six chairs and settings will displayed to represent each branch of the military. The table cloth will always be white to symbolize the pure motives when each of these men and women answered the call to serve.

One single red rose will be placed n the table to remind us of the lives of these veterans, as well as their loved ones and friends. A yellow ribbon will symbolize our continued uncertainty, a hope for their return and a determination to account for them. One lemon slice to remind us of their bitter fate, captured and missing in a foreign land. To symbolize the tears shed of the missing and their families, one pinch of salt.

A single candle will be lit to show our hope for their return, either alive or dead. A Bible will be placed on the table representing strength gained through faith to sustain us with those who are lost from our country, founded as one nation under God. One glass will be inverted to remind us of their inability to share in a toast.

Each chair will remain empty because they are missing.

Honestly, this is a tradition that typically happens in and around military establishments, but I believe I'd like to start in our family, in our home. Margaritaville will be displaying one at their free Veterans Day buffet today. It's a physical reminder of just how serious serving our country is. It's a visual reality check and a place to reflect on the bravery of the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

You got chills, didn't you?
