As we see temperatures dipping into the 30's this week, it has me wondering if there's any chance we could have a white Christmas. The answer to that is no.

Craig Ross with the Shreveport office of the National Weather Service tells us historical data shows we have only 1 white Christmas on record. That happened in 1929 when our area got a foot of snow during the week prior to Christmas. On Christmas, we still had about an inch of snow on the ground.

He tells us there was also a trace of snow falling in the area on Christmas evening in 2002.

The National Weather Service Climatological data shows we have had a trace of snow or sleet on a couple of other occasions in the Shreveport Bossier area:

1963 December 24th and 25th

1983 December 23rd and 24th

1990 December 23rd and 24th

1998 December 23rd

2009 Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

2012 Christmas Day

But none of this winter precipitation stuck on the ground at all.

On average, Shreveport gets about 1 inch of snow per year.
