Ahhhh, the hamburger. I'm almost certain it's what the Good Lord sat down to enjoy on that first Sabbath while he rested.

Over the weekend I watched the Matthew McConaughey movie, "Gold" and loved the line where McConaughey's character, Kenny Wells said, "The man who invented the hamburger was smart. Man who invented the cheeseburger was a genius."

Either way, hamburger or cheeseburger, they're both deserving of celebration most any day.

Who Actually Invented The Hamburger? That's A Tough Question

A quick Google search to determine the origin of the hamburger is convoluted at best, with several people claiming the beginnings of the creation, including:

  • Louis Lassen of New Haven, Connecticut, is credited by the Library of Congress with inventing the hamburger sandwich.
  • Fletcher Davis of Athens, Texas, is claimed to have invented the hamburger in the 1880s and sold it at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
  • Oscar Weber Bilby is credited with inventing the hamburger on a bun in 1891 on his farm in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
  • Frank and Charles Menches: These brothers are said to have invented the hamburger at an 1885 fair in Hamburg, New York, when they ran out of sausage and used ground beef instead.
  • Charlie Nagreen claimed to have invented the hamburger at a fair in Seymour, Wisconsin in 1885 by flattening meatballs and placing them between bread.

So, who knows who or when it actually got started, but thankfully it's still around and here in the Shreveport/Bossier area, we are loaded with some incredibly great places to enjoy this Godly creation tomorrow. (or any day)
