I watched Dan Wheldon win the Indy 500 this year. I am shocked and saddened by his untimely death.  The one problem with the Dallara car that Indycar uses.

The cars have a tendency to get airborne. More so than any other open wheel car I've seen in history. However, to this point there's a great deal of cruel irony. This was the last race for this model of car. The new Indycar, debuting in 2012, has taken measures to prevent the car from getting airborne. These features were tested by Dan Wheldon himself. RIP Dan you will never be forgotten.

Three other drivers, including championship contender Will Power, were hurt in the pileup.

Weldon was airlifted from the track to University Medical Center; about two hours later, his colleagues were told of his death.

"IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race."

In his honor, drivers took part in a five-lap salute around the oval.
