Being a baseball Dad I’ve spent thousands of hours at fields all over the South.  I’ve eaten nachos and pre-cooked hamburger patties from parks most people have never heard of.  This past weekend was another of those trips to a field of dreams in the middle of nowhere.

Welcome to Poplarville, Mississippi was what the sign read just about the time I thought we’d surely drive off the end of the earth.  We were here!  The sight of the National Junior College Southern Regionals.

The oldest McCoy boy, Buddy, plays for Louisiana State University at Eunice.  For those who don’t know, Eunice is about 60 miles Southwest of Alexandria and 40 miles Northwest of Lafayette.  What’s even more of a secret is just how great of a baseball program the coaching staff here has assembled over the last 10 years.

To the Junior College World, LSUE is pretty much what big brother LSU is to Division 1 baseball.  They play to win!  And they have done plenty of that.  With four National Championships in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012, and very little publicity, LSUE is easily one of Louisiana’s biggest attractions and yet, best kept secrets.

My son was on the National Championship team last year and by all appearances, they are looking to be the first LSUE team to repeat this feat.  This past weekend, LSUE, ranked #1 in the Nation, swept all comers in the Regional 23 tournament and will head to Enid, Oklahoma for the National Junior College World Series beginning this Saturday, May 25th with games scheduled all week.

LSUE and Lackawanna College from Pennsylvania will square off in the tournament’s opening game on the 25th at 9am.  Should LSUE make it to the Championship Game,  that will be played on Saturday, June 1 at 7pm.

Guess I need to stock up on Rolaids because I’m betting I’ll be eating nachos for supper this weekend.

Geaux Bengals!!!
