History was made today in the State of Louisiana in the same spot where it all began at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission.  In near record time, Representative Jeff Thompson and Senator Sherri Buffington, brought about change that will not only help our state's hungry, but provides a much needed positive light for our state's hunters involved with the Hunters for the Hungry program.

You might recall how all this started earlier this year when a health inspector threw 1,600 pounds of venison at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission  in the trash and poured Clorox over it, leaving the freezers at the Rescue Mission bare.

This new law "Senate Bill 58" affectionately known as the "Kumbaya Bill" was passed unanimously by both the Louisiana House of Representatives and State Senate. As Governor Bobby Jindal prepared to sign the bill into law, he stated, "It's so nice to see a bill that addresses two of the things we love in Louisiana, our hunting and helping our brothers when they are in need."

Senator Buffington explains the nuts and bolts of the new law,

"Senate Bill 58, which I sponsored and Rep. Jeff Thompson co-authored, clarifies Louisiana public health law so that not-for-profit or charitable organizations can receive and use donated wild game meats or fish in food and meal distribution. Our goal was to avoid another incident like the one that occurred locally this winter in which state health officials destroyed game meat that had been donated to the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission homeless shelter."

Because of this legislation, donations by Hunters for the Hungry to organizations like the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission will never be hindered again.   And on a personal note , Rep. Jeff Thompson and Senator Sherri Buffington, JOB WELL DONE!  Our state thanks you!
