Trust me, I get it. I think we've all wanted to throw away every single electronic leash we own at some point and go live in a cabin in the woods, but how sustainable is it? And would you really want to live off the grid in Louisiana?

Could you live without all of the creature comforts we're accustomed to?

I don't know about you, but when I seriously picture living off the grid in Louisiana, I envision an extreme version of Naked and Afraid. If there's a poisonous snake or spider in the world, we pretty much have it. And if I'm being honest, I'm a big fan of air conditioning. And plumbing. Yep, indoor plumbing is important to me. I don't want to have to treat my water to make it potable and I certainly enjoy the perks of having a septic system, but I do get the allure of getting away from it all.

However, living 'off the grid' doesn't mean you're giving up all modern conveniences. It just means living disconnected from local utility grids and having a higher degree of self-sufficiency. You can certainly use solar or battery power or other fuel sources for your gadgets. With that in mind, Lawnstarter recently studied the sustainability of living 'off the grid' in each state based on 23 metrics separated into five categories: feasibility, infrastructure, affordability, climate, and safety. According to their data, Louisiana ranks 25th in the country when it comes to those who want to live off the grid.

Louisiana ranked well when it came to our climate which makes me laugh because you wouldn't catch me 'roughing it' during the summer here. Yep, I'm one of those people that want a bathhouse or a camper nearby if I go camping. Maybe I'm just too bougie for all of this? Do you think you could live as a 'survivalist' in Louisiana? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Shoot me a message using the 'chat' feature in our free app or send me an email to erin.bristol@townsquaremedia.com.
