No-see-ums, otherwise known as midgies, punkies or biting midges, are a particularly annoying fly that live up to their funny-sounding namesake: they can be small enough to fly right through many screen doors. Unlike mosquitoes, these pests are also very difficult to spot when they're sucking blood.

According to the University of Florida IFAS, biting midges are particularly active during morning and evening. Their bite can cause itchiness, pain and even painful lesions. The adult biting midge is just one-eighth of an inch long. Due to their small size, the researchers say ceiling fans are often effective repellents. However, bug spray will keep no-see-ums at bay for those having fun outdoors.

If you've already seen our Mudstock survival guide, then you'll know we strongly recommend bringing bug spray (or insect repellent if you're fancy) to the event, which is happening through Sunday, Oct. 6. Most of the different brands we checked did claim protection against No-See-Ums, so you should be covered.
