It’s been 8 months of a non-Twinkie hell, but the drought has officially ended. For 11-year-old Colt McCoy, it's like Christmas has come early.

Twinkies are back in stores today. Course, they’re under new ownership and there’s a slightly different recipe. The change actually extends their shelf life by about three weeks. So apparently the food that we previously thought would survive a nuclear holocaust will now last even longer? Bonus!

Their shelf life has extended to 45 days -- almost three weeks longer than the 26 days the former Twinkie was supposed to stay fresh.

Also returning are Ding Dongs, Cupcakes and the rest of the Hostess snack family.

To celebrate the comeback of Twinkies, the company's new owners are spending millions of dollars on a marketing blitz using social media, Vine videos, billboards, building walls and a website called Prepare Your Cake Face.

In an attempt to get a jump on the expected rush, Walmart said it stocked certain stores with Twinkies on Friday. And the company also has plans to update its snack cake line to include products that are more appealing to younger consumers, lighter on the calories and possibly gluten free.

Don't rule out new treats flavored with peanut butter or packaged in bite-sized portions, said executives at Hostess.
