SPD Issues Essential Safety Tips for Shreveport Holiday Shoppers
If you live in Shreveport-Bossier, you already know the holidays are officially here! If the festive displays haven't convinced you, the insane, packed traffic on Airline Drive and Youree Drive certainly will. We love the hustle and bustle, and the stores being packed to the gills is part of the fun!
But with all the excitement comes a reminder from the Shreveport Police Department (SPD): we need to keep our heads on a swivel. As you hit the stores, the malls, and especially those parking lots, SPD wants to make sure you and your family stay safe this season.
A few simple, smart steps go a long way in preventing you from becoming a target.
Staying Safe When You Shop
Lock Up, Always: Seriously, always lock your doors and roll up your windows—even if you're only running inside "for a second." Thieves work fast!
Stay Aware, Ditch the Phone: Keep your eyes up and focused on your surroundings when walking to and from your vehicle. Distraction is a criminal's best friend, so save the scrolling for when you're safely inside.
Park Smart: When possible, choose well-lit areas near other people. Remember, criminals definitely don't like an audience.
Hide Your Valuables: This is key! Purses, shopping bags, electronics—if a thief can see them through your car window, they're a target. Secure all your gifts and valuables in your trunk before you arrive at your destination, or transfer them discreetly.
Walk With Confidence: Shopping alone late at night? Don't hesitate to ask store security or management to escort you to your vehicle. It’s their job, and your safety is worth it.
Protecting Your Home Deliveries
With more people shopping online than ever, keeping your home safe is just as important:
Track Everything: Stay on top of your package deliveries. Bring items inside as soon as they arrive.
Secure Delivery: If you can’t be home, consider using a secure delivery box, or have those big-ticket items sent to your workplace where someone is always available to accept them.
Stay alert, stay safe, and enjoy everything this holiday season has to offer, Shreveport! If you notice any suspicious activity, please call the Shreveport Police Department immediately at 318-673-7300.
