In order to relieve some of the overwhelming strain on the health care system in our country, officials are making some unprecedented decisions that will open up much needed hospital beds in cities across the U.S. - including right here in Shreveport.

According to the ArkLaTex Homepage, the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center and  several other VA hospitals in the United States are preparing to open up 1500 beds to civilian patients.  Along with Louisiana -  New York, New Jersey, Michigan, and Massachusetts will be making the usually military only medical facilities open to the general public.  An exact date for when the space would be available was not announced.

In New Orleans, where the situation is much more dire, authorities haved turned the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center into a medical support facility that will take some of the burden that area hospitals are currently straining under.  The field hospital will handle the less severe cases in order to let the hospitals focus on patients in more critical conditions.
