Shreveport Man Arrested for Fatal Hit-And-Run

Investigators with the Shreveport Police Department’s Crash Investigations Unit have made an arrest following a late May hit-and-run crash that killed 53-year-old Shawn Fitzgerald Williams.

On May 29, 2023, Shreveport Police patrol officers responded to reports of a major accident in the 3700 block of Saint Vincent Avenue. Arriving officers located Williams and a heavily damaged go-cart on the roadway. The Shreveport Fire Department responded and pronounced Williams deceased on the scene.

Detectives with the Crash Investigations Unit responded and launched their investigation. Detectives believe that Williams was assisting a man who had a flat tire on his dirt bike and while he was making made a U-turn in the middle of the roadway was struck by a 2009 Pontiac G8. The driver of that vehicle fled on foot from the crash scene and a very short time later the owner of the vehicle called to report the vehicle as stolen.

Through their ongoing investigation, detectives identified Jimitri Duane Johnson as the person they believe to be responsible for the fatality. A warrant was procured for Johnson’s arrest, charging him with one (1) count of Felony Hit and Run.

Earlier today, investigators, along with the Warrants Unit, CRU, K9 unit, and the Shreveport City Marshall’s Warrants Unit took Johnson into custody at his residence. During a brief stand-off, Johnson attempted to use a small baby as a shield to prevent officers from taking him into custody. Johnson was ultimately arrested, and the baby was unharmed.

Johnson was transported to the Shreveport Police Complex for interviews with investigators.
